The ADRC provides access to many evidence prevention programs through partnerships with local hospitals, clinics, senior centers and fitness centers. The evidence based prevention programs reduce emergency room visits, hospitalizations and overall health care costs. Stopping into your local ADRC office to have a conversation with an Information and Assistance Specialist will provide options on the program that best meets the needs and desires of you or your loved one.
Evidence Based Wellness and Prevention Classes
- Stepping On – Safe and positive learning experience to reduce falls.(Crawford and Richland)
- Living Well – Living Well is an evidence-based workshop for people who have one or more chronic conditions. (Crawford)
- Better Bones & Balance Program – Gradually improve your balance and strength to reduce bone loss and falls.
- Walk With Ease – Provides tools to develop a safe exercise routine unique for you.
- Eat Better & Move Better – Learn how you can live a longer, healthier life.
- AARP Senior Driving – Refine your existing driving skills to avoid accidents and traffic violations. (Crawford)
- Powerful Tools for Caregivers – Offers unique tools to improve the quality of life in both the caregiver and their loved one. (Crawford and Richland)
- Alzheimer’s Support Groups – Find support in your care giving journey or learn about memory screening. (Crawford, Richland)
- Tai Chi Classes– Tai Chi Fundamentals is considered an evidence-based fall prevention course which improves balance and stability. (Richland)
- PALS - or Physical Activity for Lifelong Success - is a program specifically designed for older adults who either don't exercise or haven't exercised in a long while. Gathering with your peers and going at your own pace, PALS has been researched and proven to improve walking speed and distance in participants. (Crawford)
- Strong Bodies - Strong Bodies will catalyze positive change in people of all ages to live stronger, healthier lives by providing knowledge, inspiration, access to programs, and ongoing support. Strong Bodies envisions a worldwide community of fit, strong, and healthy individuals; in turn, these empowered individuals will become positive agents of change for their families, communities, and beyond. - Stand Up and Move - Reduce sitting time and sedentary behavior without exercising! Simply learn to stand up more often and for longer durations throughout the day. This can have a positive effect on your health! This program is not an exercise program. Instead this class gives participants strategies to stand up more throughout the day. Class meets 1x per week for 4 weeks followed by a refresher class. (Crawford)
Dementia Care and Brain Health Programs
- Caregiver Books - The ADRC has a selection of books for give away and check out on a wide variety of caregiving topics. Titles include: Loving Someone with Dementia, The 36 Hour Day, Dementia Reimagined, Learning to Speak Alzheimer’s, & More.
- Awareness Cards - We have discreet business cards that can alert people you are interacting with to your situation while respecting your loved ones’ dignity.
- Educational DVDs - Information is key when caregiving for someone with dementia. The ADRC has a large selection of DVDs with a wide variety of topics for your caregiving role. Topics include: Teepa Snow Series, as well as recent movies that show the resilience of people with dementia.
- The D.I.C.E. Method - is a process that aims to help caregivers manage the behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD). Caregivers work one-on-one with Dementia Care Specialist through a process to identify and target the underlying causes of challenging actions that impact caregiver’s ability to take care of them and create solutions at home.
- Support Groups - Join peers who understand what you are going through for support, information, and education. Many offered in our area. Call for current listing or for help identifying which may best fit your need. In person & Online offerings.
- Comfort items - The ADRC has Individual Items for calming & giving purpose that can fill time at home or make community outings go smoother. Activity Boards/Blanket & Fidgets, Companions & Manipulatives, and more are available.
- Dementia Friends - WI is a global movement with the mission of changing the way people think, act, and talk about dementia.
- Dementia LIVE - is a hands-on or virtual experience for anyone seeking to understand more of what it may be like to live with dementia. A scripted version is available as well.
- Public Presentations & Trainings - provided by the Dementia Care Specialist on various topics like Brain Health; Alzheimer’s and other dementias; warning signs; caregiving; and more. Tailored tofit your needs, interactive to help your group learn about these subjects and the resources available in your community.
- SAVVY Caregiver Training - an evidence-based 7-week class where caregivers learn skills to manage daily care, learn to implement new approaches, and gain confidence for their important role. Class offerings vary, call to register or inquire.
